The Custom Action Figure Thread

For the longest time I’ve wanted to put together a thread dedicated to custom action figures and now is as good a time as any. So for those of you who are new to customizing or who have been doing it for years feel free to ask questions of give any advice you may have. And don’t be afraid to show off your work, I’ve seen some amazing things come out of this place only to fade away and be forgotten.

I’ll start things off with one of my own pieces,

Ultimate Batman

Also

Its a vault for Bruce to store his costume. Its made from a mega man playset piece with some foam board added to the bottom.

I also added this tap light to the top

Hope you guys enjoy!

I've got some TMNT and Jungle Fury customs in the works that'll hopefully be posted in the near future.

Links

TheFwoosh.com is my favorite spot for all things related to customizing. They’ve got tons of tutorials and a large member base that’s always willing to help out share tricks of the trade. Their forums are also a good place to show off your own handy work and admire others.

Jin is an amazing customizer who is always coming up with new and innovative techniques. Check out his Tutorial section for a lot of helpful tricks.

Figure Realm is another good site for people to post their work and share advice. They also throw regular contests for customizers to test their skills.

Kyle Robinson is one of my favorite customizers, he’s got a unique style and is always coming up with gold. Check out his Tutorial section for some good tips.

Black Arachnis Casting is the place to go when you’re looking for that hard to find head or helmet. I’ve ordered a few of their casts and can vouch for the quality of their work.

I'm no customizer at all but I've made a few "monster of the day" figures to recycle some of my old toys from childhood that have remained sale after sale. They just couldn't sell...

Custom Mortal Kombat Quan Chi figure... or Samuel L. Jackson as Quan Chi. It's just a coincidence... I needed a bald figure and he was the only one I had.

Also made custom "melting" legs for my McFarlane T-1000 figure. I hated the fact that McFarlane only made 1.5 of a figure so I made the other 0.5 myself...

Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart.

The Master in his long coat as seen in "Last of the Time Lords"

Martha in "The Sound of Drums" outfit.

Original Console and Room

Second Console and Room

Classic TARDIS (Door sign and Interior labels made by the fantastic BabyJelly - a member of Doctorwhoforum.com's Toys and Merchandise section. Top notch chap.)

I used something called Crayola Model Magic. Got a little sample of it when my little cousin ordered a kid's meal from a restaurant. He had no idea what it was so he didn't want it. So I looked at it closely and wondered if this stuff would work on custom figures. I tried making my first custom out of it (Quan Chi figure) and it actually worked out nicely. I also used miscellaneous bits and pieces from other toys.

Really the only custom stuff I have is just stuff i've been able to paint, I don't have the skill level to sculpt something like how i would envision it.

PR Heroes Green Ranger

Bandai of America White Ranger Morpher

I turned an extra Black Kakuranger into Blue, and repainted white, but I have to use the face from an extra yellow since my cats stole the part. and I still have not found it to this day!!

My favorite customs, the PR Heroes Series 3!

Quick Daibouken sword mod

Unfinished and probably never will be White Mystic Ranger

Wolf Warrior

Not painted, but I just threw the bandai japan gingaman weapons with the Bandai America Lost Galaxy Lights of Orion Rangers.

How ive been longing to make my fanfic sentai characters into toys. now i finally fulfill one of them! not a good paintjob though, im just learning how to customize figures. neways, this fig i modified from a sound fury red ranger, coz the arm's kinda broke, i hav 2 buy another gekired. idk why the pink colors on the figure appears too bright on the pic. it shouldnt be that bright for the naked eye.

this is the pic i based my figure on. this is seired from fuhen sentai seiranger (my fanfic). idk if ill do the others, maybe if i hav more time and skills.

here are the pics!

seired VS gekired (dragon vs tiger!)

Speed he used JF Red ranger. Look at the bottom picture. Also you can tell he has the Gekimorphers on his hands just painted over.

Thats an awesome original character kagami5566. Not exactly a color scheme I'd go with but nice all the same. When I first saw the JF figs I knew they'd be great for customizing. Only thing that bothers me is the fact that the scale doesn't really allow use of older ranger parts.

I've been trying for the longest to come up with costume designs for Jungle Fury master rangers. I liked the ones that were released, but I wanted to give them a unique look that sets them apart from the core three. The bat, shark, and elephant rangers are obvious, but I also wanted to add a penguin, Gorrilla, and gazelle ranger figure.

I might as well post my TMNT customs that I put in the cool toy thread.

The Shredder

Bebop

Krang

Rocksteady

I'll ask a very n00bish question, but what are the best paints to use to paint old 8" MMPR figures and Automorphins? Looking to make some quick customs.

That Black Legend Ranger is sick! I'd totally steal that idea if I could get my hands on one of those guys anymore. Anymore pics?

Really finding decent base figures is a bit of work. I usually pick up a couple action figures for Toy's R us or KB toys whenever I get paid. Marvel Legends, and DC Classics are both really good lines for customizing. Although they don't really lend themselves to PR customs too well.

I'd say the best place to look for base figures right now is KB toys, as they've got a ton of figures on sale.

Well that depends on how much you are willing to spend. If you're not trying to break the bank you can find a great selection of Acrylic paints at Walmart. They usually cost around 60 cents and double that at craft stores. I recently started buying Model Master Acylic's from Hobby Lobby. Its half the size and usually run for about 2.99, but the quailty is better.

Here's my custom Jungle Mase/ Geki Hammer. I put this together the other day, really simple custom. The handle comes from an old ninja turtle weapon, the chain from ninja wolverine, and the ball was a megaman weapon. I sculpted over the handle and ball before painting.
